Initiating discussions on countermeasures against maritime cybercrime


Korea Coast Guard Holds National Assembly Forum on Maritime Cyber Threat Response.

On the 7th of this month, the Korea Coast Guard (Commissioner Kim Jong-wook) hosted a forum at the National Assembly Member's Building under the theme, "Strategic Responses to Maritime Cyber Threats" The forum aimed to discuss the digitalization of the maritime industry and the development of national-level infrastructure to counter maritime cybercrime. Over more than 100 participants, including National Assembly members, academics, and representatives from the shipping industry, attended.

Democratic Party Representative Shin Jung-hoon emphasized the worsening maritime cyber threats and the Korea Coast Guard's insufficient cybersecurity capabilities, highlighting the urgent need for additional specialized personnel and dedicated organizations. People Power Party Representative Lee Dal-gon underscored the rise in cyberattacks due to the acceleration of digital transformation and called for the creation of a cybersecurity framework to address these challenges.

Commissioner Kim Jong-wook of the Korea Coast Guard described the severity of maritime cyberattacks and stressed the need for enhanced support to strengthen the Coast Guard's cyber investigation capabilities.

During the forum, DSlab Company CEO, Jo Yong-hyun presented on "Recent Maritime Cyber Threat Trends and Response Measures" emphasizing the need for specialized maritime cyber investigators and stronger collaboration among relevant institutions. Chang Jin-hwan, director of the Korean Institute of Criminal Law and Policy, explored the characteristics of maritime cybercrime and proposed expanding the Korea Coast Guard's dedicated organizations. Professor Lim Hyun-taek of Kookmin University highlighted the need for strengthened cybersecurity cooperation and proactive responses. Attorney Song Ji-yong from Sian Law Firm stressed the necessity of a specialized cybercrime response organization and the importance of increased funding from the National Assembly. Professor Kim Gi-beom of Sungkyunkwan University recommended several measures to secure expertise in maritime cybercrime investigations. Attorney Lee Yoo-kyung from New York shared lessons learned from Australia's maritime cybersecurity response.

The forum was an important and meaningful opportunity to explore national-level responses to maritime cyber threats, providing a significant platform for discussing comprehensive strategies.
